Immediate Steps to Take if You’re New to Being a Family Caregiver

If you’ve had kids, you know a bit about caring for another person. If you’re married or in a relationship, you know a bit about caring for another. Caring for a parent has some similarities, but there are also a lot of differences. If you’ve never experienced any of this and are brand new to being a family caregiver, the challenges may seem overwhelming.

Family caregiving doesn’t have to pose tremendous hurdles. By taking a few initial steps, you can make it very easy to transition to this new role.

Take Care of Legal Paperwork First

The very first thing a family caregiver needs to do is to get legalities out of the way. As a family caregiver, you need to be able to talk to your mom or dad’s doctor. Without a medical power of attorney or HIPAA permissions in place, that won’t happen.

At the very least, your mom or dad needs to fill out HIPAA paperwork. This gives the doctor permission to talk about your parent’s medical tests and results with you. If you will ever be in a position to make medical decisions, your parent also needs to draw up a medical power of attorney.

A medical power of attorney is important. If your mom has a stroke and cannot talk, you have the right to speak on behalf of your mom. You know your mom’s wishes on things like feeding tubes and ventilators and can make sure doctors do exactly what your mom wants.

Talk to Family Members and Close Friends

Talk to your family members and friends to see if they want to and can help provide some of the care your mom and dad need. You may find your siblings are eager to help them. When you have input, create a weekly schedule so that everyone knows their role in the care plan.

Create a Care Plan

Come up with a solid list of the help your parents need. Go through the areas where they cannot manage things on their own. Figure out what you can do to help them. If your help isn’t enough, look into senior care services. With senior care, you can pick and choose the services they get. You might want to keep making their meals on your own but have help with their grooming and personal care.

It’s not hard to arrange senior care. Pick up the phone, talk to the advisor about your parents’ strengths and weaknesses, and schedule services.
