What Can You Do to Take Care of Yourself Better?
Caregivers are remarkably bad at taking care of themselves. This often happens because the caregiver is so wrapped up in the person they’re caring for that they don’t see what it’s doing to them. Don’t let that be you.
Share Some of the Responsibilities
One of the ways that caregivers neglect themselves the worst is to avoid delegating tasks to other people. If you’re bad at delegating and sharing tasks, you need to learn how to get better at that. Continuing to try to handle everything on your own means that you’ll never have time for yourself.
Hire Home Care Providers
Home care providers can provide so much for you as a caregiver. They can handle tasks that you need done, they can offer companionship and other help to your senior, and they can offer you respite time. even if you only engage elder care providers for a few hours a week, you’ll see a huge difference for yourself.
Rest and Recharge When You Can
You need to take opportunities to rest and reset yourself whenever you find them. You might not think that these times are ideal, but that’s unfortunately not where your focus needs to be. The focus for you needs to be on taking advantage of opportunities, particularly for rest, when you can find them.
Assess What You Need and Make it Happen
If you’re definitely not taking care of yourself right now, you need to sit down and really think about what isn’t working and what you need to do to change that. Once you finally understand what isn’t working, you need to put a plan together to put the fix in motion. If you put this off, you’re only going to continue to have the same problems and frustrations.
Take Time Away for You
Every now and again you need to take time away just for you. That time doesn’t need to be spent running errands or anything like that. In fact, you need to make sure you’re spending at least some of the time away from caregiving just on what makes you happy. Even if that means you’re just reading in the corner of a bookstore for an hour, that’s what you need to do.
Even if you think that you’re taking the best care of yourself that you possibly can, take the time to assess what you’re doing, what’s working, and what could be working better. When you make that a regular habit, you can solve problems before they get out of hand.
